Ferry sinks in South Korea, nearly 300 still missing

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A multi-story ferry carrying 459 people, mostly high school students on an overnight trip to a tourist island, sank off South Korea's southern coast Wednesday, leaving nearly 300 people missing despite a frantic, hours-long rescue by ships and helicopters. At least three people were confirmed dead and 55 injured.

The high number of people unaccounted for — likely trapped in the ship or floating in the ocean — raised fears that the death toll could rise drastically, making it one of South Korea's biggest ferry disasters since 1993 when 292 people died.

One student, Lim Hyung-min, told broadcaster YTN after being rescued that he and other students jumped into the ocean wearing life jackets and then swam to a nearby rescue boat.

"As the ferry was shaking and tilting, we all tripped and bumped into each another," Lim said, adding that some people were bleeding. Once he jumped, the ocean "was so cold. … I was hurrying, thinking that I wanted to live."

Local television stations broadcast live pictures of the ship, Sewol, listing to its side and slowly sinking even as passengers were jumping out or being winched up by helicopters. At least 87 vessels and 18 aircraft swarmed around the stricken ship. Rescuers clambered over its sides, pulling out passengers wearing orange life jackets. But the ship overturned completely and continued to sink slowly. Within a few hours only its blue-and-white bow was seen sticking out of the water. Very soon that too had disappeared.

Some 160 coast guard and navy divers searching for survivors inside the ship's wreckage, a few kilometers (miles) from the shore of Byeongpung Island, which is not too far from the mainland. The area is about 470 kilometers (290 miles) from Seoul.

Those rescued — wet and many without shoes — were brought to the nearby Jindo Island, where medical teams wrapped them in pink blankets and checked them for injuries before settling them down on the floor of a cavernous gymnasium hall.

The ship had set sail from Incheon, a city in the northern part of the country and the site of South Korea's main international airport, on Tuesday night for an overnight, 14-hour journey to the tourist island of Jeju.

About three hours from its destination, the ferry sent a distress call at about 9 a.m. local time Wednesday after it began listing to one side, according to the Ministry of Security and Public Administration. Officials didn't know what caused it to sink, and said the focus was still on rescuing survivors.

Lee Gyeong-og, a vice minister for South Korea's Public Administration and Security Ministry, said 30 crew members, 325 high school students, 15 school teachers and 89 non-student passengers were aboard the ship.

Kang Byung-kyu, a government minister, said the two dead are a female crew member and a male believed to be a student. A third body was found in the water but details were sketchy.

He said 164 people were rescued, of whom 55 were injured. He said 292 people were missing, likely either trap

Express bus falls into ravine near Gua Tempurung

IPOH: An express bus fell into a nine metre-deep ravine after veering off the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Gopeng.

Kampar OCPD Supt Ng Kong Soon said the driver of the Expres Konsortium bus was killed instantly while two passengers were left seriously injured as a result of the incident at KM301.5 of the expressway, at about 4.25pm on Monday.

Supt Ng said the injured victims, one man and one woman, were rushed to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here for treatment.

The bus, he added, was heading north at the time of the incident.

"Initial investigations show that the bus driver could have lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid a vehicle, which had skidded, in front of it.

"As far as we know, there were only three people onboard the bus.

"However, search and rescue efforts by the police and Fire and Rescue Department are still ongoing to ensure there are no other victims," said Supt Ng .

Malaysia: Abductors Want $11.3M for Chinese Woman

Gunmen have demanded a ransom of 500 million pesos ($11.3 million) for the release of a Chinese tourist abducted last week from a Malaysian resort off Borneo island, a Malaysian minister said Thursday.

The gunmen, believed to be Abu Sayyaf militants, kidnapped a 28-year-old Shanghai woman and a 40-years old Philipino woman from the Singamata Reef Resort in the eastern Malaysia state of Sabah on April 2014.

Philippine authorities believe the women were taken to the island township of Simunul in Tawi-Tawi, the Philippines' southernmost province. Sabah, a popular tourist destination, is just a short boat ride from the southern Philippines, home to Muslim militants and kidnap gangs.

"The kidnapper, or kidnappers for that matter, have asked about 500 million pesos ... worth of ransom" for the Chinese tourist, Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamid said on private television station TV3.

"We have sent our team, the police and the negotiators ... to negotiate about the reduction of ransoms," he said. No ransom was asked for the Filipino woman, who was working at the resort, he said.

Zahid was not able to be reached for further comment. An aide confirmed Zahid's comments and said investigations were ongoing.

Mohammad Mentek, a senior Sabah security official, said the kidnappers have made telephone contact with the family of Gao Hua Yuan, the Chinese kidnap victim, but declined to say whether a ransom demand has been made.

Philippine security official who monitors Muslim militant activities in the southern Philippines confirmed that a ransom demand was made.

Zahid's aide and the Philippine security official both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

In carrying out the kidnappings, seven men armed with rifles, four of them masked, arrived at the resort on a speedboat and fled with the two women, according to Malaysian police.

China's ties with Malaysia have come under stress recently because of anger among Chinese over the search for a missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner carrying 153 Chinese passengers.

The Abu Sayyaf, a militant Muslim group, has carried out seaborne kidnappings for ransom in the region before. In 2000, Abu Sayyaf gunmen snatched 21 European tourists and Malaysian and Filipino workers from Malaysia's Sipadan diving resort and brought them to the southern Philippines, where they eventually were released in exchange for large ransom payments.

In November, suspected Abu Sayyaf militants killed a Taiwanese tourist and kidnapped his wife from another Sabah resort. The woman was released a month later in the southern Philippines.

The haze in Malaysia has reached hazardous levels in two districts.

KUALA LUMPUR: The haze in Malaysia has reached hazardous levels in two districts.

Port Klang and Banting recorded high Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, which reached the hazardous level at 352 and 316 respectively, on Friday morning.
According to the Department of Environment (DOE) website, the API reading at Port Klang rose to 352 at 7am, from 233 at 6pm on Thursday, while the reading in Banting at 6pm on Thursday was at 189.
Thirteen other areas also recorded unhealthy API, namely Petaling Jaya (186), Putrajaya (176), Batu Muda (176), Shah Alam (165), Cheras (147), Kuala Selangor (154), Nilai (165), Port Dickson (168), Seremban (155), Bukit Rambai (134), Bandaraya Melaka (115), Muar (111), and Tanjung Malim (107).
It also stated that 18 areas registered moderate API reading and 18 areas recorded good API.
API readings of between 0-50 are considered good, moderate at 51-100, unhealthy (101-200), very unhealthy (201-300) and dangerous (exceeding 301).
The public can surf the portal, apims.doe.gov.my of the DOE, to find out the API in their areas.
Meanwhile, the Selangor Education Department had ordered all the 71 schools in the Kuala Langat district to close on Friday due to the haze, besides the 131 schools in the Klang district.
State Education Director Datuk Mahmud Karim said the standard operating procedure was for schools to close when the Air Pollutant Index (API) exceeded 200, meaning air quality was at the “very unhealthy” level.
Mahmud said that when the department ordered all schools in the Klang district to close on Friday, principals found that students in some schools in Tanjung Sepat in the Kuala Langat district had begun to suffer from red and watery eyes.
"We allowed the principals to use their discretion and close their schools," he said.

Najib opens Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak opened the Second Penang Bridge in front of more than 10,000 people who came to witness the historic event.

Clad in black and purple Baju Batik, Najib announced the new name of bridge— the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge after the Yang di-Pertuan Agung — against the backdrop of a spectacular fireworks display. The new bridge is located some 8km from the first Penang Bridge.
The historic occasion was launched by Najib by the touch of a launch pad, after which a light display came on, followed by a three-dimensional video presentation, animation montage and a ten-minute fireworks display.
In his speech, Najib described the new crossing as an iconic project which would continue to be a source of pride for all Malaysians, especially Penangites.
He also paid tribute to his predecessors – former  prime ministers Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi — who  were instrumental in seeing to the realisation of the landmark infrastructure project.
"Despite the change in leadership for Penang following the 2008 general election, it was Pak Lah (Abdullah) who maintained that the bridge project must go on.
"We have to rise above politics ... We must do what is right for the people of Malaysia," he said when officiating the opening of the bridge.
The RM4.5 billion bridge, spanning 24km, took five years to be completed and now links Batu Kawan in Seberang Prai and Batu Maung on the island and the crossing involves a 20 minute car ride.
Motorists will get to enjoy a month's long toll-free ride effective today. Some 17km of the bridge is built over water, and will have the distinction of being the longest bridge in the world which incorporates the High Damping Rubber Bearing (HDRB) which provides an effective seismic isolation system.
The dual carriageway bridge, with a dedicated motorcycle lane on each side, is almost double the length of the first Penang Bridge, built in 1985.
Najib, along with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and other VIPs who included Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Mukhzir Mahathir,  Abdullah, Cabinet Ministers and members of the diplomatic corps, were taken on a "Hop-On Hop-Off" bus ride on the new bridge after the launching ceremony.
Also present were Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof and Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd chairman Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob and managing director Datuk Dr Ismail Mohamed Taib.
Pointing to international icons around the world such as San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Najib said Malaysia could hold her own in having Southeast Asia's longest bridge.

The Missing of MH370

A new report suggests the missing Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 made its first off-course turn to the west after a heading change was entered into the aircraft’s flight computer, a move that requires advanced knowledge of the plane’s flight systems

The missing Malaysia Airlines airliner first deviated from its set flight path following an entry into its flight computer, according to a new report.
The New York Times, citing “senior American officials,” reports Flight MH370’s first unexpected turn to the west was made “through a computer system” in the aircraft’s cockpit. That revelation is significant because changing the aircraft’s route via the flight computer requires a more intimate understanding of the Boeing 777’s flight systems than manually manipulating the control yoke to change heading.
Commercial jets and other large aircraft typically travel the skies via a system of waypoints, each identified by a five-character code. Those waypoints are manually entered into an aircraft’s flight computer so the airplane’s autopilot system can fly the desired route. Pilots can insert new waypoints into an aircraft’s flight computer to change the aircraft’s course midflight if asked to do so by an air-traffic controller or for other reasons.
The Times report suggests that someone on board the aircraft did indeed enter a new waypoint into Flight MH370’s computer. However, it remains unclear whether the waypoint change was made before or after the flight began.
The Wall Street Journal reported last week that data from the aircraft indicated “someone made a manual change in the plane’s direction.” That report, though, didn’t specify whether someone on board the plane had made a change in the aircraft’s flight computer or used the aircraft’s yoke to change its direction.
Flight MH370 has been missing since disappearing from radar screens on March 8, triggering a huge search operation that currently involves 26 nations. Many theories have been considered to explain why the plane would go so drastically off course in the absence of much solid evidence
